This village is located at 1314 meters above sea level and has 759 inhabitants (2013). It is located in the middle of the region and has the typical terraced houses and flat roofs. They believe the village has been founded in the Arabic time (8th century). One of the lower parts of the town has still an Arabic name Aynalcútar.
The name of Bérchules is believed to be derived from the Arabic "berchul" meaning Bergel, although "fruitful field" is used because of the abundance of natural sources, the fertility of the land and pleasant temperature. Alcútar is also part of the municpality Bérchules and located just 2 kms away. A main part of the municipality is situated in the Natural Park Sierra de Nevada.
