Cañar

The village is situated at 1014 meters above sea level and has 462 inhabitants (2013). Its is nestled in the heart of Las Alpujarras, where you can enjoy all the natural charms of tradition in this region.

Its location offers unique views to both the coast and the Sierra Nevada. This is why the town has the nickname Balcony of the Alpujarras. A great part of its territory is situated within the Natural Park Sierra Nevada.

The village is not accessable by car, but there is a parking at the entrance of the village. The main part of the buildings have kept their historic look, so you got the idea that you are walking alone in an open air museum.! Alone because this is a hidden secret and not be discovered by mass tourisme, which makes this town one of the most charming and quiet villages in the Alpujarra. There are two bars with a terrace, where you can enjoy a drink and the beautiful views over the valley, lake and even the Mediterranean.

Festivities in Cañar

Their popular festivals are celebrated every year on the 24th, 25th and the 26th of July in honor of the patrons, San Joaquin and Santa Ana (either they arel on a weekend or not).

Points of Interest in Cañar

Church Santa Ana: This church was built on what was once a mosque. It consists of a single rectangular nave 30 x 8 meters;
Puente Palo: a recreation area located 9 km from Canar, with barbecues and tables. It is situated between large wooded pines and chestnuts;
Dique 24: a dam in the Chico River. The water falls 30 meters down. It is located between Soportujar and Cañar and is worth seeing it, because of the scenic views;
Four mills are located along the river between the canyon and the village;
Waterfalls El Dique 24;
Natural Park Sierra Nevada.
