The village is located at 1040 meters above sea level and has 418 inhabitants. The village was the home of the British writer Gerald Brenan in the 1920s, and he described its customs in South from Granada, one of his best-known books.
A lot of emigrants from mainly Andorra, Germany and Switzerland were settled in the 80ties. This trend has been reversed in recent years, mostly British, Dutch and Germans, bought a a property, reformed it and inhabied them. Yegen is a part of the municipality Alpujarra de la Sierra.
