Castle San Miguel - Almuñecar

This Arabic castle sits on a small hill, which is difficult to access. The original fortifications dates from 1st century B.C. and was built by Phoenicians and Romans, as evidenced by different sources and structures of Roman buildings. During the Moorish occupation, the castle was enlarged to include 4 towers and three gates. It has a wide moat and a drawbridge. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural monument in 1993. There is a small museum within the castle grounds. Certainly the castle structures are from the Arabic period, as it became the retreat of the Nasrid dynasty, XIII. At the end of the reign of the Catholic King Ferdinand, in the sixteenth century, the moat, drawbridge and the imposing front entrance with its four circular towers were built.
