From the tenth century Arab sources tell us of the existence of a fortress in this place, but nothing is told about about its dependencies. For ten centuries it has undergone continuous and profound changes, so that an evolutionary analysis of it runs into serious difficulties due to the structural complexity. Its original military structure and its evolution until the fifteenth century are unknown only that its construction was motivated by purely defensive reasons. However, during the Moorish period it also housed a royal palace. I was also be used as a royal prison. According to chronicles, several were rulers suffered prison within its walls: Yusuf III, Muhammad VIII Little, Lefty IX Muhammad Abu Nasr Sad and Muley.
