The Castle Remains of Huéscar - Torre del Homenaje

In the beginning of the XIV century, king Ismail of Granada gain ground on the eastern border of the kingdom and destroyed the rock castle of Huéscar, defended by the Knights of Santiago. At that moment a fortress was built, where the current village of Huéscar is situated. It had a walled city moat, probably over an area of Roman cemeteries, which explains why the Torre del Homenaje incorporates blocks with Roman inscriptions and tombstones. This is the origin of the current village of Huéscar, that from that moment was, together with Baza the defense line for Nazari attacks in the east of the kingdom.

The tower that has been left from the castle has been recently renovated and has received a special mention at the European Prize for Urban Public Space.

A visit is included in a guided circuit and also includes the Museum Jose de Huéscar, which houses the legacy of the famous cartoonist who illustrated the adventures of "Rin Tin Tin and Rusty out."
