The village is located 250 meters above sea level and has 6878 inhabitants (2013). It is believed that its origin is Roman, but also prehistoric remains were found in the cave "Cueva de los Murciélagos" which is located in the municipality of Albuñol. In the Moorish period it was the most important city in the "Gran Cehel" or "Gran Costa" It was in these centuries defended by the castle of the Rabita. The population is working in the agriculture which is one of the most competitive in Europe, with significant the presence of greenhouses with fruit and vegetables. Albúnol has also a long winemaking tradition. Albúnol is the gate to the Alpujarra and in the same time at the coast. In La Rabita people can enjoy the beaches where you even can visit a nude beach named "Playa la Ruso". The village is an ideal place if you want to combine countryside and beach live.   

The albuñolense municipality is formed by the villages of Albuñol, La Rabita, El Pozuelo, Los Castillas, La Ermita and Los Chaulines. Also noteworthy are the hamlets of La Balsilla, El Cañuelo, Huarea Castle, Los Chilches, Los Colich, El Cortijo Bajo, Haza Llana, The Maurel, Los Morenos, Los Rivas, El Saltadero, La Tejera and El Cercado.

• Cave: "La Cueva de los murciélagos" is located in the coastal range of the Contraviesa near the town of Albuñol and was discovered in 1831 by a local resident who took advantage of the layers of guano that was deposited by bats in the cave entrance.
