Its name is the most curious of the region. Written interchangeably in the past with H or G. It appears that it refers to the existence of a large freshwater pond, which probably affirmed that before there has been a lake. Important archaeological remains of prehistoric and Roman times were found in the village.
During the Moorish domination is confirmed as a military center and farmhouse, a function that is accentuated because during the reconquest it was being situated near the Spanish border. From this period remains the watchtowers built by the Nasrid kings.

Festivities in Huélago
- On the 25th of April the feastas in honor of the patron San Marcos is celebrated with the traditional donuts previously blessed by the priest, either in the door of the Church or house to house ;
- On the 24th of June the festivities in honor of San Juan Bautista are held with processions, games and the popular street party;
- In August Ascensión de la Virgen is celebrated with a big party.
