Its name is the most curious of the region. Written interchangeably in the past with H or G. It appears that it refers to the existence of a large freshwater pond, which probably affirmed that before there has been a lake. Important archaeological remains of prehistoric and Roman times were found in the village.
During the Moorish domination is confirmed as a military center and farmhouse, a function that is accentuated because during the reconquest it was being situated near the Spanish border. From this period remains the watchtowers built by the Nasrid kings.
