Huéneja

There is evidence of human settlements since the time of Argar, as evidenced by the findings of numerous objects and graves on a spot near this town. In the Islamic era it was characterized with a fortress that was called Reniha or Guenichea. It is noteworthy Boabdil stayed in a farmhous of Huéneja from September 27 to October 3 in 1490. Its strategic location has made this village taking a leading role since prehistoric times, thanks of the presence of water and minerals.

A great part of the municipality is situated within the National and Natural Park of Sierra Nevada. Occupying an area of 1,785 hectares in the National and 704 hectares in the Natural Park.

The municipality comprises several towns: Huéneja, La Huertezuela, Las Cuevas, and Los Olivos.

The village Huéneja presents an urban structure characterized by the districts Castillo (old fort) and the Albaicin (the old Muslim district) that retains its intact network.

It is very interesting to visit the Recreation Area “Los Castaños”, or take the route los Molinos de Izfalada and visit the National and Natural Park of Sierra Nevada.

Festivities in Huéneja

San Blas is celebrated on the 3rd of February;
With Eastern several procession are held;
On the 25th of April is San Marcos celebrated;
On the 1st of May is San José Obrero celebrated (procession);
In the hamlet Huertezuela are the festivities of San Jose held on the 1st of May (procession);
On the 3rd of May the day of crosses is held;
On the 27th of May is San Francisco celebrated (procession);
On the 26th of July are the festivities of Santa Ana held;
In the first weekend of October is the fair held;
On the 21st of November are the festivities in honor of the patron held (procession);
From the 13th till the 28th of December is the dance with the Souls held;
