The municipality comprises the towns of Montefrío, which is located at the foothills of the Sierra de Parapanda, Lojilla and the spreaded hamlets Milanos, Los Molinos, La Viñuela, Fortaleza, Corcoles, Los Gitanos, Rincón de Turca , Campo Humano, Los Hospitales and Baratas.
The history of the village dates back to the prehistoric times, but the city itself does not appear on the map until the Arabs arrived. It was the residence of the king Nasrid Ismail III. It fell into Christian hands in 1488, at the siege of the Catholic Monarchs in Granada.
Montefrío is a town that lives from the agriculture with a fully consolidated production of olive oil and derivatives and also related companies for the processing, packaging and marketing. The village started also the cultivation of new products like asparagus.

In October 2015 the village was mentioned by National Geographic as one of the 10 villages with the best views in the world. Thanks to this the tourisme has received an important impulse.
