Cueva del Gato - Sierra de Alfaguara
The Sierra de la Alfaguara is located in the province of Granada and hides several natural caves, such as Cueva de Gato and Cueva de los Mármoles They are of great beauty despite that they are little known. A hiking trail of 18 kilometers route goes along these caves, but you can also only visit the caves on a one way trip.
How to get there?
- Take the highway A92 from Granada to Guadix and take exit 259. If you are traveling from Granada you have to turn left in order to cross the highway.
- After about 200 meters you can take a dirt road to the right which is going to the "Casa Forestal de los Peñoncillos". Park you car and folow the dirt road.
- Take the right road at the road barrier.
- After 2 km there is a crossing, the dirtroad which is going straight will lead you to "Cueva de los Mármoles", but you take the dirt road to the left and cross the small river.
- After 1 km the road is making a very scharp curve. In this curve you will see a small stone wall in order to control the water. You turn right in order to take a path that is going up the mountain.
- After a few hundred meters you will enter an rocky area where you will encounter the entrance of the cave at the upper part.
The Sierra de la Alfaguara is part of the Natural Park of Sierra de Huétor. One point of access to this place is the town of Alfacar, a town that was the playground of the Zirids monarchs.
The spring of Fuente Grande, also known as las Lágrimas, is located in the upper town. The well, is back dating from the eleventh century and is one of the most important remains of the caliphs era who are now preserved.
