The village is located 730 meters above sea level and has 889 inhabitants (2014). The albuñelense municipality contains the towns of Albuñuelas, La Loma and also the villages of Los Prados de Lopera and Los Recaldes.
The village had human settlement in prehistoric times. They found several remains in the caves that are located four hundred meters from the village. It was in a flourishing stage at the time of Arab domination with its castle that was built at the same time as the Alhambra in Granada. Today only the remains are visible. The village is divided in three parts, the oldest and nicest part you will find at the end of the village (Barrio Alto).
The grounds of Albunuelas are rich wich minerals and Sulphides, Zinc and lead. This resulted that there were a lot of mines in the past. Some of them are still accessaible (but be carefull).
