The village is situated at 677 meters above sea level and has 19.364 inhabitants (2014). The municipality Las Gabias includes the towns of Gabia Grande and Gabia Chica, plus the annexes of Híjar, Los Llanos, Pedro Verde and San Javier. His name seems to come from Hisn Caviar, meaning "military tower" referring to the tower that still exists in Gabia Grande. Las Gabias was a Camp of Juan of Austria in the war against the Moors.
Las Gabias has one of the two inland golf courses in the province of Granada. It has 18 holes, a tennis and paddel court, a practice field and a club.
