The village is situated at 792 meters above sea level and has 7.398 inhabitants (2014). The municipality is also including the ski resort Pradollano and Barrio Monachil which is located next to Cajar. It is just 8 km´s away from Granada and it is a perfect basis for people who like nature. Its name comes from the Arabic word Monastir, in Latin terms meaning "monastery". In its district there is a corresponding Argaric the archaeological site: the Cerro de la Encina. Pradollano with its ski resort in de Sierra Nevada is part of the municipality of Monachil. In 1996 the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 1996 were held in this place.
