The village is situated at 774 meters above sea level and has 1.407 inhabitants (2014). Formerly there was a tram line that ran from Granada to the Barranco de San Juan, a place near Güéjar Sierra, Sierra Nevada. This tram stopped in different towns during his journey, including Pinos Genil. Today part of the route can be done by foot, passing through beautiful landscapes along the river Genil. The town was even populated before the Islamic invasion, although it was the Arabs who gouged special attention to cultivating of the fertile orchards of its plain. Columbus was advised here, as he crossed the Roman bridge, that Queen Elizabeth accepted the conditions of funding a intended voyage to the Indies.
